5 Ways Parents Can Keep Kids Healthy During the Holidays

It is possible to have a safe, healthy, but pleasant holiday experience for your kids.

The holidays are a special time for children. As much as we want every Christmas celebration to become memorable for our kids, we also want to keep them safe and healthy. If you have children at home, keep these tips in mind for a healthy and happy holiday.

1. Child-proof your Christmas home decor.

A visually pleasing home adds to the holiday ambiance, but we must also be mindful of what we keep within reach of children, especially toddlers. Opt out of having decorations small enough to fit a baby’s or toddler’s mouth to avoid choking hazards, and keep fragile and sharp ornaments away from children’s reach to prevent potential injury.

2. Keep the sweets and treats in moderation.

Giving in to your children’s cravings for sweets and yummy treats is fine, as long as done in moderation. High-sugar foods like candy, pastries, sodas, and juice packs may not be healthy if your children consumes them excessively. Rather than setting a limit, create a system with your kids so that their holiday tasks at home are incentivized with a set amount of treats.

3. Make sure their vaccinations are up-to-date.

Keep track of their immunization schedules, especially if you are planning to travel. Vaccination against the flu, chickenpox, and measles are among the important immunizations your child needs. If your child is already eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine, make sure they receive it for added protection against the virus.

4. Prepare for the weather.

If you are spending the holidays in a destination location, make sure to prepare your kids for the weather conditions and shift in temperatures to prevent sudden bouts of cough, fever, or cold. As an additional precaution, be prepared with over-the-counter medicines that address these sicknesses, such as carbocisteine for cough, paracetamol for fever, and phenylephrine HCl for the common cold.

5. Take active precautions against getting sick through vitamins.

Your kids may not be getting the right amount of nutrients during meal times this holiday season. With proper diet and exercise, make sure they are taking vitamins for proper nutrition and better immune response.

With the proper preparations, you too can create a healthy and pleasant holiday experience for your kids each year.
