How to Preserve the Shelf Life of Your Kids' Vitamins

Get more value with these tips on how to make the most out of your children’s vitamin supplements.

Every parent intends to prepare his or her child for life’s challenges. One way to ensure this is by keeping children strong and protected, with the help of proper diet, exercise, and vitamin supplementation.

Children’s vitamins usually come in liquid form, either as oral drops or in the form of syrup. Unlike other types of supplements, liquid vitamins often have shorter shelf life. This makes it especially essential to be mindful of how we store them at home to maximize their benefits up until their Best Before date.

Get more value with these tips on how to make the most out of your children’s vitamin supplements.

1. It is generally not advisable to keep children’s vitamins in the kitchen. Humidity affects the shelf life of vitamins, so the general rule is to keep them in a cool, dry place. The kitchen may not be a good idea as the heat from cooking can reduce the shelf life of vitamins. While not all forms of vitamins can be kept in the refrigerator, it is generally an acceptable storage space for liquid vitamins unless otherwise stated in the product information leaflet.

2. Always keep the bottle tightly closed. After helping your child take their daily dose of vitamins, close the lid right away. Be mindful of leaving the bottle open for too long, as the exposure to air may diminish its potency.

3. Do not store them by the window. If your child is taking multivitamins, keep them away from direct light. Most liquid vitamins come in dark and opaque bottles to protect against light exposure, but it is still better to observe added precaution. Children’s multivitamin supplements are often packed with vitamins A and D, both of which are prone to losing potency when consistently exposed to light.

4. Keep the vitamins out of reach of children to prevent them from playing with it or taking it by accident.

We want to make sure our kids get to use up their vitamins down to the last drop. We can only safely do so if we take good care of how we store them. You can find more tips on the proper storage of vitamins and other medicines in this article
