DOSAGE AND ADMINISTRATION

Adult Dose:
 Orally, 500 mg every 8 hrs

Pediatric Dose:

  • Neonates and infants:        20-30 mg/kg BW/day in divided doses every 12 hrs
  • Infants >3 months and Children <40 kg: 25-50 mg/kg BW/day in divided doses every 8 hrs or every 12 hrs.

Duration of Treatment:

  • Usual duration of amoxicillin therapy is 5 to 14 days, depending on the type and severity of infection.
  • For most infections, continue treatment for at least 48 to 72 hrs after the patient becomes asymptomatic or after evidence of bacterial eradication has been continued.
  • A minimum of 10 days treatment is recommended for infections caused by group A β-hemolytic Streptococci in order to prevent rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis.
  • Frequent bacteriologic and clinical appraisal is necessary during treatment of chronic urinary tract infections and maybe required for several months after therapy has been completed.
