STATEMENT ON USAGE FOR HIGH RISK GROUPS
Pregnancy: (Pregnancy Category B) Although there have been no reports of adverse effects to the fetus to date, safe use of cephalosporins during pregnancy has not been definitely established. The importance of the antibiotic therapy to the mother should outweigh the potential risks to the fetus.
Lactation: Excretion of cefalexin in milk increased up to 4 hrs after a 500 mg dose; the drug reached a maximum level of 4 mcg/mL, then decreased gradually, and disappeared 8 hrs after administration. Caution should be exercised when the drug is given to a breastfeeding woman.
Children: Safety and effectiveness of cefalexin in the pediatric population have been established and reported in various clinical trials.
Renal Impairment: In patients with impaired renal function, decreases in doses and/or frequency of administration of cefalexin may be required and should be based on the degree of renal impairment, severity of infection, susceptibility of the causative organism, and serum concentrations of cefalexin.
