RP Ranks Low in Breastfeeding
3/9/2009

A survey conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) showed that the Philippines is among the many countries in the world that are low in breastfeeding, a WHO representative said. The Philippines is one of the worst countries among the 56 countries they surveyed, Dr. Howard Sobel said during the launching of the first breastfeeding-friendly bus and the breastfeeding room in Davao City. Although he did not indicate the specific rank of the country, he said that the Philippines is one of the places in the world ranked the worst in breastfeeding. He said only 16 percent of the mothers are exclusively breastfeeding, while 15 percent of babies in the country has not even have a drop of breast milk. The breastfeeding-friendly bus is a gesture of support to DOH advocacy of helping passengers to breastfeed their babies while on travel. In related developments, Dr. Sobel recognized the effort of Davao City in promoting breastfeeding related moves. One of these is the recognition of the need to have a breastfeeding station in the workplace. It now has the highest number of breastfeeding stations in the country.
