Health officials of the Department of Health said it is wise for consumers to limit intake of saturated fats as they increase the level of cholesterol in the body. Saturated fats can be found in animal sources such as meat, internal organs, whole milk and milk products such as cheese and butter.
The health department urges the use of poultry, fish and vegetables such as legumes, beans, peas, nuts and seeds to replace red meat whenever possible. Remove skin and all visible fat from meat or poultry before cooking. Cook on a rack so that fat will drain off.
“Limit intake of egg yolk to two to three times a week and minimize frying of foods. Avoid drippings and gravy because of its high fat content, the agency added.
The DOH health officials recommend the use of corn, coconut, soybean, olive, canola and sunflower oil for frying. |
