UMED holds bioethics confab in Macau

UMED continues its commitment in providing continuing medical education and development with a bioethics conference on obstetrics and gynecology in Macau, China recently. The conference was the result of a series of meetings with UMED’s board of advisers in OB-gynecology, composed of Drs. Ricardo Manalastas Jr. and Marilyn Ruaro, DVP-Biofemme Susan Yumul, Biofemme Senior Medical Manager Dr. Zenaida de Guzman, and Biofemme Product Manager Edgar Go. UMED Director Dr. Edgardo Ortiz formally opened the conference and acknowledged the presence of more than 100 delegates. Drs. Ricardo Manalastas Jr. and Marilyn Ruaro chaired the various sessions. Fr. Fausto Gomez discussed the philosophical basis for bioethics, emphasizing that the development of bioethics was based on respect for the human person. Gomez also provided different philosophical approaches on bioethics, virtues, cases, and caring approaches. Meanwhile, Dr. Marita Reyes gave an in-depth discussion on how bioethics can help the physician in decision-making. Dr. Esperanza Rivera discussed the sensitive issues on ethical practice of the medical profession. Dr. Angeles Tan-Alora gave the definitions and guidelines related to human care. Atty. Albert Rebosa, who is also a physician, tackled the similarities, differences, and controversies of law and ethics as applied in patient care. He also provided an overview discussion on criminal, civil, and administrative liabilities. During the small group discussions, Drs. Patrick Moral joined Manalastas and Ruaro in discussing the case studies with Gomez, Reyes, Rivera, and Tan-Alora serving as facilitators.
