Workers Advised to Adopt Healthy Office Lifestyle to Prevent Diabetes
3/11/2008

To curve the rising prevalence of diabetes among workers, the International Labor Organization (ILO) strongly advised workers worldwide to adopt a healthy lifestyle even in the office. Concurrently, it also advised employers to have a health program for employees. Citing a data from the World Health Organization, Meredith Bullamore of ILO’s Geneva Social Observatory, said diabetes now affects more than 180 million people worldwide—with the number likely to double by 2030. Increasing absenteeism and safety of workers are now among the greatest concerns about diabetes and related chronic conditions in the workplace, Bullamore said. Bullamore, who is now working with ILO to address diabetes in the workplace, stressed the need for workers to adopt a health program that nurtures balanced diet and regular exercise. “One of the best tips for maintaining a healthy work environment and lifestyle is to make small and smart choices,” she pointed out. She said one of the best methods to prevent diabetes is for companies to adopt a holistic health program to help workers maximize their existing conditions. “It is important that employers optimize the physical activity levels required during work hours,” she said. Workers are also advised to regularly monitor their sugar, weight, and cholesterol levels to avoid diabetes.
