Scientists at United Laboratories Inc. (UNILAB), the largest and leading pharmaceutical and healthcare company in the Philippines, scored another research breakthrough with ClearCalcium™ technology, the latest research and development innovation that helps children meet their daily-recommended calcium requirements.
Developed by PediaTech, Unilab’s research and development arm dedicated to developing innovative solutions in childcare, ClearCalcium™ is a technology that provides good-tasting, fast-dissolving calcium in a powdered beverage mix. It has an approved US patent.
“With ClearCalcium™ technology, 300 mg calcium per dose can be incorporated in a powdered beverage mix which dissolves rapidly with no visible calcium sedimentation when stirred by hand for less than 20 seconds,” said Dr. Kennie Dee, Unilab senior vice president for R&D. “It also has no calcium aftertaste, which makes it satisfactory for children to take.”
ClearCalcium™ is Unilab’s response to the increasing risk of calcium deficiency-related health concerns in the country. According to the 2003 Food Consumption Survey of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute of the Department of Science and Technology, Filipinos’ average per capita calcium intake is only 57.1 percent adequate. The low-calcium intake is due to low consumption of milk and milk products that comprise only 5.6 percent of Filipinos' total food intake. This puts Filipinos, specially children with low calcium intake levels on their bone growth periods, at a serious risk of having bone problems in the future.
The development of ClearCalcium™ demonstrates Unilab’s unwavering commitment to excellence and continuing improvement by developing proprietary technologies that help make healthcare products even better for a healthier Filipino family. |
