Malunggay could be the new anti-aging alternative.
This was according to Dr. Lydia Marero of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI). Scientists have recently discovered that Malunggay, which goes by the scientific name Moringa Oleifera, carried a lot of health benefits.
“Because of its high content of vitamins A, C, and E, which are very potent antioxidants, malunggay is a very good quencher of unstable free radicals that can react with the damage of molecules that cause aging,” said Dr. Marero.
A cup of cooked Malunggay, added Marero, already contains 3.1 g protein, 0.6g fiber, 96mg calcium, 29mg phosphorus, 1.7mg iron, 2,820mg beta carotene, 0.07 mg thiamin, 0.14mg riboflavin, 1.1mg niacin, and 53mg ascorbic acid. This vitamin content has a lot of health benefits.
Aside from its antibiotic and antifungal properties, Malunggay has also shown potential in preventing the development of various chronic ailments like arthritis, cancer, heart, and kidney diseases.
Meanwhile, a study conducted by the Bureau of Plants has revealed that men who eat Malunggay fruit have an increased sperm count.
Despite of Malunggay’s health benefits, a project that involved the Malunggay plant reportedly failed to take off. This is due to the taste of Malunggay, which needs to be improved. To be successful, Malunggay has to be profitable. Taste is one key factor that should be addressed to ensure widespread use and profitability.
